First graders at Cunningham Park Elementary participated in a project-based learning (PBL) activity that blended language arts and social studies content. We had a first grade election for a fictional Vienna mayor where three storybook characters were candidates: Max from Where the Wild Things Are, Lilly from Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse, and Goldilocks from Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Our entry event was a virtual meeting the Vienna Mayor, Linda Colbert, to learn about her role in the local government of Vienna. First graders asked questions about her job, her daily schedule, and inquired about how she helps the Vienna community. Mayor Colbert also took us on a virtual tour around the Vienna Town Hall where we got to see what the town council’s meetings look like and learn about some of Vienna’s history. In the following days, students read and studied about the three fictional storybook characters and identified their multiple character traits. Then, students were ready to begin their PBL challenge of creating a campaign poster for the story book character they believed would be the best mayor. The first grade classes had a virtual PBL share fair together where students practiced being communicators in small groups. In these groups, students presented their posters and listened to other students’ perspectives and ideas. The whole grade level came together for a vote, where the winner was declared as Lilly, from Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse. We had meaningful discussions about being respectful of the winning candidate, even if our favorite candidate wasn’t picked.
