Dear Cardinal Families,

On behalf of the entire staff at Cunningham Park, I want to express our deepest gratitude for the incredible Teacher Appreciation Week you organized. We know the planning, preparation, and effort that goes into making a week like this so special, and we are incredibly touched by your dedication. Knowing that parents went to such lengths to make us feel valued and supported was incredibly heartwarming. It's a powerful reminder of the strong partnership we have with our school community, and the positive impact it has on our students' learning environment.

🌟SEPTA Award Nomination

🎺🎻Spring Concert 🎙️

Please join us on May 29th at 6:00 pm in the gym for our Spring Strings, Chorus, and Band Concerts.

• Performers need to arrive at 5:30.
• Strings students report to the cafeteria.
• Chorus students report to the art room.
• Band students report to the band room. 

📅SOL Testing

We began SOL testing last week. If your child is in grades 3-6, please ensure they arrive to school on time and have a good night's sleep. The remaining tests are listed below. 

• May 16 - 5th Gr Science
• May 17 - 6th/7th Gr Math
• May 21 - 5th Gr Math

Field Day will be held on Thursday June 6th at Cunningham Park Elementary School.  During this event it is encouraged that students wear closed toe shoes such as sneakers or tennis shoes, wear sunscreen, and bring a reusable water bottle.  There will be water bottle filling stations available for students.  

3rd-6th grade students will be participating in Field Day from 9-11AM in a variety of indoor and outdoor games with a majority being outside.  Within the 12 stations there are 2 water stations, a water balloon toss, and a sponge and bucket really.  Students are encouraged to bring a change of clothes in case they get wet.   If you would like to sign up to volunteer for the 3rd-6th grade Field Day you can access the sign up genius HERE

Kindergarten-2nd grade students will participate in field day during their one-hour specials block.  Kindergarten will have field day from 12-1PM, 1st grade will have Field Day from 1:05-2:05 PM and 2nd grade will have Field Day from 2:10-3:10 PM.  During Field Day for K-2nd grade students there will be 5 stations most of which will be inside.  

During Field Day for both 3rd-6th and K-2nd students there will be a break station where students will be offered a 4 ounce snow cone.  The snow cone will be made on site using the school snow cone machine, ice from the school ice machine, and SNAPPY snow cone syrup.  Mrs. Petty will be sending a letter home with your child with the nutrition label and ingredients.

🍎Community Conversations with Dr. Reid

Dr. Michelle Reid has been hosting Community Conversations and Employee Conversations  throughout the division since the fall of this school year. She is committed to getting to know our school communities. 

 The dates for the final two Community Conversations are below. These events provide a great opportunity for parents and caregivers to connect with Dr. Reid, share concerns and ideas. She is there to listen and answer your questions. Your voice is important.

We invite you to register for one of the last two community conversations of the school year. Please register for a time and place that is convenient for you. Pre-registration is not required, but does help us plan.

😎Register Today for FCPS Summer Camps

Registration for FCPS Career and Technical Education (CTE) camps and Institute for the Arts (IFTA/E-IFTA) camps closes on Friday, June 7. Tuition is waived for students eligible for free and reduced-price meals. Bus transportation is available from select FCPS high schools and middle schools. Stop by Woodson High School on Saturday, June 1, 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., for the FCPS Summer Extravaganza! In addition to learning activities, enjoy tips and helpful information for families. Enjoy face painting, food, music, a moon bounce, a petting zoo, storytime, and student performances — at no cost!

Dear Cardinal Families,

As we are already into the month of May, we want to take a moment to express our deepest gratitude to the heart and soul of our school: our phenomenal teachers! This week, and every week, we celebrate their unwavering dedication to our students' success.

Our teachers are more than just educators; they are mentors, cheerleaders, and champions for each and every child. They foster a love of learning, nurture young minds, and inspire them to reach for their full potential. It's their passion, creativity, and tireless efforts that truly propel our students on their journey of "Soaring to Success."

This Teacher Appreciation Week, let's shower our teachers with appreciation. Send a heartfelt note, express your gratitude, or simply say "thank you" for all they do.

Now, to keep our students soaring high, consistent school attendance is crucial. Every day in the classroom brings valuable learning opportunities, builds upon previous knowledge, and allows students to fully engage with their teachers and peers.

Remember, regular attendance is a key ingredient in our "Soaring to Success" recipe! By working together – teachers, parents, and students – we can ensure a successful finish to this school year and set the stage for an even brighter year ahead.

🚲👟🛴Bike, Walk, & Roll to School Day

This Wednesday, May 8 is Bike, Walk, & Roll to School Day! We encourage our students to bike, walk, or scooter to school! Our PTA will join us to cheer students on and hand out prizes. 

Fun Fact: Bike Month has been celebrated since 1956 to showcase the many benefits of bicycling and encourage more people to give biking a try. Fairfax County has an extensive network of both paved and natural surface bike trails. You can access a map to all the trails in Fairfax county online.

Pyramid Event - Hidden in Plain Sight (HIPS)

Date and Time: 05/21/2024 (Tue.) from 6:30PM - 8:30PM EDT

Location: Thoreau MS Cafeteria

Hidden in Plain Sight (HIPS) is a community awareness program designed to enlighten parents through a unique learning experience encompassing insights into trends and indicators of potentially risky behavior.

We guide you through a presentation that opens your eyes to what is right in front of you. This program begins with a “show and tell” of “red flags” that can indicate risky behavior in teens. An educational portion follows that includes a PowerPoint presentation that touches on drug and alcohol use, vaping, mental health and behavioral concerns, risky sexual behaviors, trending "challenges," and more.  

We include up-to-date statistics and local trends, and law enforcement officers will share their experiences they have had in our community identifying risky behaviors and helping to put kids on the right path to a healthy life. 

Finally, we discuss how to open the door to communicating with your teens about risky behaviors and how to address issues that arise.

Registration is required, and seats are limited for this free event.

Dear Cardinal Families,

On behalf of our entire school community, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to our exceptional School-Based Technology Specialist (SBTS), Dr. Keri Mina. Dr. Mina will be transitioning to a new role at the middle school level and we would like to take a moment to celebrate her invaluable contributions to our school.

Dr. Mina's dedication to fostering digital citizenship in our students has been truly remarkable. Under her guidance, our students have developed the critical skills they need to navigate the online world safely and responsibly. Her innovative programs and engaging lessons have empowered them to become responsible digital learners and citizens.

Furthermore, her leadership during the unprecedented challenges of the pandemic was nothing short of inspirational. Dr. Mina played a pivotal role in ensuring a smooth transition to virtual learning. Her expertise and tireless efforts provided a crucial support system for both students and teachers, enabling continued learning and connection during a difficult time.

Beyond her leadership, Dr. Mina has been a constant source of support for our teachers. Her unwavering commitment to their technological needs has empowered them to integrate technology effectively into their classrooms, fostering rich and engaging learning experiences for our students. We wish Dr. Mina all the very best in her future endeavors!

Dr. Mina's last day with us will be Friday, May 17th. We will begin the process to hire a new SBTS shortly.

📅Orthodox Good Friday/Teacher Work Day

Friday, May 3, is Orthodox Good Friday, and a teacher work day. Millions of Orthodox Christians commemorate Good Friday, also known as “Great Friday” to remember the events leading up to Jesus' crucifixion. There will be no school for students that day. See the complete school year calendar.

➡️Class Placement for 2024-2025 School Year Deadline: Friday, May 3rd

We will soon begin the class placement process for next year soon. Homeroom and Specials teachers spend much time reflecting on the school year and discussing your children with whom they have developed such close relationships; this work is both careful and thorough.

In making placements into the next grade’s homerooms, we seek to build positive communities rather than assigning students to a particular teacher, which would limit our ability to build effective classroom dynamics. We strive to create balanced classrooms and we take into account the many new students who will join us next school year. While we do believe that it is important for children to have friends in their class, we also want them to be open to forming new friendships while at school.

We invite parents to offer their perspective on friendships and on any unique needs your child has that we might not be aware of. Your input is optional, and teachers will not schedule conferences specifically to discuss placement. If you have information to share about your child that will assist us, please complete this form by Friday, May 3, 2024. Any requests received after this date will not be considered. Please do not make requests for specific teachers. If you have multiple children, please fill out one form for each child. Finally, we will take into account the information that you send us, but the final decision on class placement rests with our school team. Thank you for being mindful of our process and deadlines.

Gently Used Spirit Wear

Has your child outgrown their CPES spirit wear?  Is your child moving on to middle school? Are you wondering what you can do with your child's spirit wear? You are in luck!  We will be collecting gently used Cunningham Park Spirit Wear to share with new families that move to our neighborhood during the school year and miss the opportunity to purchase. These donations will help new students feel more connected and create a sense of belonging for them. We will be collecting these items in the main office. Please drop them off anytime during the school day.  Thank you!

🏫Apply for Early Learning for Children Six Weeks to Four Years Old

The FCPS PreK and Early Head Start program is accepting applications for SY 2024-25. FCPS PreK and Early Head Start programs provide a high-quality early learning experience for qualifying income-eligible children ages six weeks to four years living in Fairfax County. Watch this video to learn more (also available in Spanish). 

• Pre-K prioritizes children who turn 4-years-old by September 30 and also accepts applications for 3-year-old children.

• Early Head Start is located at three elementary schools - Clearview, Crestwood, and Dogwood - and accepts applications from pregnancy to 2 years old.

Families are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Space is limited and based on income and educational risk factors, not first come, first served. Applications are accepted online, by email ([email protected]), or in person at FCPS’ Leis Center location in Falls Church. I would like to extend our deepest gratitude to our Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, Jenna Murgia, for her recent presentation at our last PTA meeting on our school's Advanced Academic Programs.

During the presentation, Ms. Murgia provided a comprehensive overview of the advanced academic services offered at our school, shedding light on the myriad opportunities available to our students. From enrichment programs to challenging lessons, Ms. Murgia's insights have undoubtedly inspired our community to aim higher and reach further in pursuit of academic success.

Moreover, Ms. Murgia’s commitment to inclusivity and accessibility within our advanced academic programs is a testament to her unwavering belief in the potential of every student. By fostering an environment that values diversity and celebrates individual strengths, she ensures that each student has the support and resources they need to thrive academically.

Beyond the classroom, our Advanced Academic Resource Teacher serves as a beacon of guidance and encouragement for both students and parents alike. Ms. Murgia’s willingness to go above and beyond to address questions, provide mentorship, and facilitate meaningful discussions reflects her genuine investment in the success and well-being of our community.

🎨Family Fine Arts Night 🎼

Attendance in the Early Grades

Many of our youngest students miss 10 percent of the school year—about 18 days a year or just two days every month. Chronic absenteeism in kindergarten, and even preK, can predict lower test scores, poor attendance and retention in later grades, especially if the problem persists for more than a year.

Who Is Affected 

Kindergarten and 1st grade classes often have absenteeism rates as high as those in high school. Many of these absences are excused, but they still add up to lost time in the classroom.

Why It Matters

If children don’t show up for school regularly, they miss out on fundamental reading and math skills and the chance to build a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers.

❤️‍🩹School Health Services Satisfaction Survey

The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) and Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) School Health Services invites parents/guardians of FCPS students to participate in a survey requesting feedback on the level of satisfaction with School Health services provided to the school community.

FCHD employs school health aides and public health nurses who provide school health services to the students in FCPS. To determine the quality of these services, a survey has been developed by the FCHD to be shared with all parents or guardians who interact with the school health rooms. The survey will open on April 15, 2024 and will remain open until April 26, 2024. The survey should take approximately five minutes to complete.

We are celebrating our Earth and invite our students to join us for Earth Week Spirit Week!

• Thursday, April 25 - wear red for Climate Change Day
• Friday, April 26 - wear a nature print for Wildlife Day

Looking for more fun Earth Week activities? Celebrate the end of Earth Week by joining the Mount Vernon Environment Expo at Fort Hunt Park on Saturday, April 27 from 11am-3pm.

DID YOU KNOW?

• Starting in preschool and kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
• Missing 10%, or about 2 days each month over the course of a school year, can make it harder to learn to read.
• Students can still fall behind if they miss just 1 or 2 days every few weeks.
• Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
• Absences and tardiness can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up

Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school—and themselves. Start building this habit in preschool so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Eventually
good attendance will be a skill that will help them succeed in high school and college.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

• Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
• Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
• Keep your child healthy and make sure your child has the required
  shots.
• Introduce your children to their teachers and classmates before
  school starts.
• Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up.
  Call on a family member, a neighbor or another parent.
• Try to schedule medical appointments and extended trips when school isn't in session.
• If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers,
  school counselors and other parents for advice on how to make
  your child feel comfortable and excited about learning.

❤️‍🩹School Health Services Satisfaction Survey

The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) and Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) School Health Services invites parents/guardians of FCPS students to participate in a survey requesting feedback on the level of satisfaction with School Health services provided to the school community.

FCHD employs school health aides and public health nurses who provide school health services to the students in FCPS. To determine the quality of these services, a survey has been developed by the FCHD to be shared with all parents or guardians who interact with the school health rooms. The survey will open on April 15, 2024 and will remain open until April 26, 2024. The survey should take approximately five minutes to complete.

💗 Family Summit

The FCPS Family Summit will take place on Saturday, April 20, 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m., at Marshall High School. The conference will cover topics that are helpful for all families such as raising resilient, independent children; forming meaningful connections with children; addressing big emotions; and the dangers of opioids and fentanyl. Participants may also join online sessions, which will provide supports for students with disabilities and their families.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Immigrant Family Reunification Class

A class will be held online in Spanish for immigrant families looking to reunite during challenging transitions. Saturday classes will be available April 20 or 27 from 9-11:30 a.m. Register online. Dear Cardinal Families,

Eid Mubarak to those in our Muslim community celebrating! This year's Eid al-Fitr artwork was created by Mark Twain Middle School student Tazrian S. In Islam, Eid al-Fitr is a 3 day festival to mark the end of Ramadan. Muslims dress in new clothes, give charity, and pray in congregation. Eid is celebrated with the exchange of presents and delicious food with family and friends.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, April 10, 2024 is an FCPS holiday. All schools and offices, including Cunningham Park ES, will be closed for the Eid al-Fitr Holiday.  Classes will resume on Thursday, April 11, 2024.

Showing Up Matters for R.E.A.L.

As you may be aware, chronic absenteeism refers to students missing 10% or more of the school year for any reason, including excused and unexcused absences. While attendance is crucial for academic success and student well-being, we understand that various factors can impact a child's ability to attend school regularly. Please read below for ways you can support your child's success!

Coming to school everyday is an opportunity to build Routines, increase Engagement, provide Access to resources, and support Learning!

Routines: Daily attendance routines can reduce stress, increase your child’s self-confidence and lay a foundation for good attendance in later grades. 

Engagement:  Participation in school helps your child connect with other children and adults and get excited about learning. 

Access to Resources:  Schools can give you access to meals, physical and mental health care and other supports, and fun enrichment activities (sports, clubs, music, afterschool and summer programs, etc.). 

Learning:  Children learn best from hand-on activities and through meaningful interactions with their teacher and other students.

🗳️ Nominations Open for the Bussey Memorial Equity Award

The Minority Student Achievement Oversight Committee (MSAOC) sponsors the Dr. Lawrence Bussey Memorial Equity Award to honor the legacy of Dr. Bussey, a founding member of the MSAOC and a longtime advocate for students and families. Read more about Dr. Bussey. 

This award recognizes staff or community members who have demonstrated significant and impactful efforts to improve the educational experiences and outcomes of students from groups who are marginalized or underserved.

Any FCPS employee, student, or community member can nominate an individual or group for the award. All nomination materials must be submitted by Wednesday, May 1.  The winner will be recognized at the FCPS Equity Symposium on Tuesday, June 18.

💐Spring Portraits

Spring Portraits are now available to view and order online. All orders will include free shipping until April 16, 2024. The online code is your child's Student ID number. Parent questions/concerns regarding portraits can be directed to [email protected]. 

📖 Lexia Parent Night: How We Help Your Child Learn to Read

FCPS funds the use of Lexia for all elementary and middle schools as part of their literacy instruction. Lexia is a computer-based program that supplements classroom instruction to help students develop literacy skills. It also provides teachers with data to identify students who need additional support and the ability to know which specific concepts and skills to prioritize. Attend a virtual information night on Tuesday, April 9, to learn more about Lexia and how FCPS is integrating it into the classroom to support student growth.

Participants will also get tips for supporting their students at home. Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of third grade.

🥰 SEL Screener Results

Students in grades 3-12  took the SEL Screener during the month of March, providing updated information on their SEL skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships, and making responsible decisions. The screener also asks students how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

Calling all student artists! The 2024 Conservation Poster Contest theme is "May the Forest Be With You, Always." This contest is open to all K-12 students in Fairfax County, and scouts are eligible to earn a poster contest patch. Welcome back from a restful spring break! I hope you all had a chance to recharge and spend quality time with loved ones.

We're thrilled to have you back, and excited to jump into the final stretch of the school year. This quarter will be full of learning, growth, and exciting events. We'll be celebrating all our students' accomplishments, big and small.

In other exciting news, a solar eclipse is happening on April 8, 2024. It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon, and one that requires important safety reminders. Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes. 

Here's what you need to know:

• Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce this at home.
• Regular sunglasses are not good enough. The NASA website has more information about eye safety.  
• Eclipse timing: The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m. (which coincides with dismissal for some students), and ends around 4:32 p.m. Please remind your child to be especially vigilant about eye safety during dismissal. If you have concerns about your child walking or riding the bus home, please arrange for alternative transportation.

On Monday, March 18, Cunningham Park parents/guardians were sent an email containing a link to complete the online FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form. This questionnaire is part of the VDOE-mandated Performance Evaluation Program for principals and offers parents/guardians an opportunity to provide anonymous input about various topics related to our school. These topics include how the principal demonstrates/impacts instructional leadership, school climate, management, communication and community relations, culturally responsive and equitable leadership, and professionalism within the school.

The questionnaire will be administered between March 18 and April 5. When you receive an email from FCPS Surveys, please take a few minutes to complete the questionnaire. Your feedback matters!

Kindergarten Registration

⏰ Community Forums on Middle School Start Times

Fairfax County Public Schools is exploring options for adjusting middle school start times and invites the public to be part of the process. Prismatic Services, Inc., an educational consulting firm, will lead the forums. All forums will deliver the same presentation and provide the same feedback opportunities. Please attend the event that works best for your schedule: 

Monday, April 29, 6-8 p.m., at Glasgow Middle School. 

Monday, May 6, 6-8 p.m., at Whitman Middle School.

Monday, May 20, 6-8 p.m., at Hughes Middle School.

Wednesday, May 22, 6-8 p.m., at Frost Middle School.

This week, and for the first time, FCPS is celebrating Neurodiversity Affirmation Week. It's a time to recognize, appreciate, and honor the diverse neurological differences that exist among us, including those with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other neurological variations. Our goal is to foster an inclusive environment that values all student’s unique learning styles and strengths, understanding that diversity is not just about the ways in which we differ, but also about embracing these differences to make our community stronger and more vibrant. We are proud to support our neurodiverse students, staff, and families.

Kindergarten Orientation

The date and time of our Kindergarten Orientation has changed and will be earlier! We are excited to host our rising kindergarteners and their families on Tuesday, April 2nd from 1:00-2:00 pm.

Kindergarten Registration: It’s as Easy as 1-2-3…

There’s an easy five-step process for parents wanting to register their child for kindergarten:

1. Determine eligibility. 
2. Identify your local school. 
3. Gather documents. 
4. Fill out forms. 
5. Schedule an appointment.

After the appointment at the school (the student and one caregiver must be present), the student will be ready for orientation, Bridge to Kindergarten, or any other introductory events each school may host. Read more about the registration process.

Parents may register their children online for kindergarten through 12th grade. Learn how to begin the online registration process. When registering, parents will create (or log in to an existing) SIS ParentVUE account. Contact our registrar at njmadariaga@fcps.edu if you have any questions. 

☀️ Safely View the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8 

A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and will be viewable, depending on weather, in Fairfax County. The eclipse will begin in our area around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20 p.m.  

Because the timing overlaps with dismissal, it is crucial that students understand the importance of safe viewing practices. We encourage families to review these Solar Eclipse Resources, especially the eye safety information. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon while prioritizing safe solar viewing.

Calling All Rising 3rd-6th Graders

Students in all FCPS schools can enroll in the Elementary Institute for the Arts. IFTA is a weekly Arts enrichment program for students in rising 3rd through 6th grades during the month of July. Students take classes in Art, Music, Theatre, and Dance every day. Transportation is provided from around the county. Tuition assistance is available for students who qualify. 

Calling All Students Currently in grades 6th-11th

The Institute for the Arts (IFTA) is a two or three-week summer enrichment program for students in middle school and high school. Students select from nearly 60 classes in:

• Health and PE 9*
• Music

Dear Cardinal Families,

This year, spring break is March 25-29 and the main office will be closed. We will be eager to welcome your children back to school on Wednesday, April 3, after a Teacher Workday and Staff Development Day. Student attendance is very important. Every day, our teachers will be teaching, and students will be learning. Studies have shown that just two absences per month can cause students to fall behind. Let’s finish this school year strong!

🏆It's Not Too Late! SEPTA Excellence Awards are Still Open!

A Special Education PTA (SEPTA) is a PTA organization affiliated with the State and National PTA but specifically established to address the unique needs of special education, special needs, and disabled students and families.

From the beginning, Fairfax County SEPTA has believed in the importance of recognizing the outstanding FCPS teachers, administrators, paraprofessionals, specialists, students, and schools that go above and beyond to support students with disabilities in our schools. To celebrate these dedicated professionals, an annual awards ceremony is held.  Show your children’s educators your appreciation by nominating them for an award!

Enter nominations online now through March 17, 2024. 

✨AAP School-Based Services (Level II - Level III)

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) and CPES is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of advanced learners. Students can be screened for subject specific and part time AAP services at any time in the school year. In the spring, schools review data on all students to determine services for the start of the next school year.

Parents or guardians can initiate the screening process by submitting the AAP School-Based Services (Level II-III) Referral Form to the Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART) or Assistant Principal by April 15, annually.

⚡Lightspeed Classroom Management

As part of our commitment to creating a safe and focused learning environment for our students, our school is using a classroom management tool that will help teachers better connect with student devices during classes. We are continuing to expand our use over the coming weeks. This tool will provide teachers with a number of helpful features:

• Easily view student screens in real time from the teacher console to see which students may need guidance or support.
• Focus student attention on a particular website on their device to minimize distractions.
• Pause student access to the internet to focus on other classroom tasks.

We believe this classroom management tool will allow us to maximize class time to support your student’s learning while at school. Please note that student devices will not be monitored outside of school hours. The regular filters remain in place on school devices, but once they are home, teachers cannot monitor students. As parents, we would like to encourage you to sign up for your own Lightspeed reports, which will allow you to see how your child is spending time on the computer during and after school hours.

There’s an easy five-step process for parents wanting to register their child for kindergarten:

1. Determine eligibility. 
2. Identify your local school. 
3. Gather documents. 
4. Fill out forms. 
5. Schedule an appointment.

After the appointment at the school (the student and one caregiver must be present), the student will be ready for orientation, Bridge to Kindergarten, or any other introductory events each school may host. Read more about the registration process.

🎨🎭💃🏽 Elementary Institute for the Arts

Calling All Rising 3rd-6th Graders

Students in all FCPS schools can enroll in the Elementary Institute for the Arts. IFTA is a weekly Arts enrichment program for students in rising 3rd through 6th grades during the month of July. Students take classes in Art, Music, Theatre, and Dance every day. Transportation is provided from around the county. Tuition assistance is available for students who qualify. 

Calling All Students Currently in grades 6th-11th

The Institute for the Arts (IFTA) is a two or three-week summer enrichment program for students in middle school and high school. Students select from nearly 60 classes in:

• Art
• Dance
• Health and PE 9*
• Music
• Theatre

Dear Cardinal Families,

Spring is just around the corner, and with it comes a season filled with new beginnings and exciting learning opportunities! In this newsletter, I want to highlight two important things:

Celebrating Our Diverse Community

At Cunningham  Park Elementary, we embrace the rich tapestry of cultures and backgrounds that make up our student body. Throughout the year, we celebrate and recognize various cultural holidays and observances. To ensure all students feel included and supported, we encourage families to contact their child's teacher regarding accommodations. This may include adjustments around lunch, prayer/meditation spaces and times, or even modifications in classroom instruction. We believe in fostering an environment where all students feel comfortable expressing their unique traditions and beliefs.

Your Voice Matters: Family Engagement Survey

Earlier this week, you might have received an email with the FCPS Family Engagement Survey from K12 Insight, an independent research firm. Your participation in this survey is crucial!

By taking a few minutes to answer the questions, you provide valuable feedback that helps us shape practices to better support our students. Your insights will help us strengthen the partnership between your family and our school, ultimately creating the best possible learning environment for all.

🏆Nominations for the 2023-2024 SEPTA Excellence Awards are open now!

A Special Education PTA (SEPTA) is a PTA organization affiliated with the State and National PTA but specifically established to address the unique needs of special education, special needs, and disabled students and families.

From the beginning, Fairfax County SEPTA has believed in the importance of recognizing the outstanding FCPS teachers, administrators, paraprofessionals, specialists, students, and schools that go above and beyond to support students with disabilities in our schools. To celebrate these dedicated professionals, an annual awards ceremony is held.  Show your children’s educators your appreciation by nominating them for an award!

✨Reminder about Medication

Please do not send in medication with your child in their backpacks. If your child needs medication during the school day, you will need to come in to provide your child the medication or fill out a medication authorization form giving the school the authorization to dispense medication to your child. Thank you for helping to keep our school safe.

💵Do You Know Where FCPS Funding Comes From?

The majority of FCPS funding is requested from the Fairfax County government, which generates its revenue from real estate and personal property taxes. The Commonwealth of Virginia provides the next largest source of revenue to FCPS through state aid and sales tax. The rest of the funding comes from a variety of sources, including federal aid and tuition for non-county residents. (The numbers above represent the FY 2025 proposed school operating fund in millions.)

FCPS does not have the authority to impose taxes and may only charge fees where the Commonwealth of Virginia has granted specific authority. Learn more about FCPS’ FY 2025 Advertised Budget.

🎤 Join a Community Conversation on Fentanyl and Other Drugs

A community conversation addressing the opioid crisis within Northern Virginia and Fairfax County Public Schools will be held Wednesday, March 18, 6:30-8 p.m., in the auditorium at Lake Braddock Secondary School. Please enter through Door #14. 

All attendees will receive a free REVIVE! Narcan during the event and learn about support services currently available within FCPS and Fairfax County.   

This discussion will provide families, staff, and students with valuable knowledge about the dangers of drugs and deadly fentanyl. The material discussed is suitable for students in grades 6-12. Together as a community, we aim to explore collaborative strategies to minimize the impact of these harmful and too-often fatal substances.

Language interpretation services are available as well as American Sign Language accommodation. Childcare and transportation will also be provided, as needed. Learn more about the event and register online.

The date and time of our Kindergarten Orientation has changed and will be earlier! We are excited to host our rising kindergarteners and their families on Tuesday, April 2nd from 1:00-2:00 pm.

Reminder March 5th Presidential Primary No School

The Fairfax Board of Elections has requested that schools be closed on Tuesday, March 5, to accommodate the administration of the 2024 presidential primary election.  Cunningham Park is a voting location.  

As a result, March 5 will be a school holiday for students and a virtual School Planning Day for staff. Central offices and school offices will remain open. SACC will remain open, as it does on other professional work days. 

We look forward to seeing our Cardinals back in our nest on Wednesday, March 6, 2024!

As your principal, I am incredibly proud of the vibrant learning environment we foster here at Cunningham Park. Our dedicated teachers, passionate support staff, and engaged students come together every day to create a space where students soar to success.

Public Schools Week is an annual celebration that brings together school leaders, educators, parents & community leaders to recognize the importance of our nation’s public schools. Cunningham Park Elementary welcomes every child, regardless of ability, race, religion, wealth, language, country of origin or needs. Our diversity is our strength. Together, we can ensure that our public schools continue to be a beacon of opportunity and excellence.

💻Lightspeed Parent Report 

FCPS offers resources to assist parents and guardians in gaining insight into their child's activity on any FCPS device. These resources, powered by Lightspeed, our internet content filtering service, come at no expense to families. You have the option to enroll in a weekly Parent Report, which offers a compilation of the primary websites your child accessed. For a deeper understanding, you can register for the Internet Use Parent portal, allowing you to access more comprehensive browsing details and even temporarily disable internet access outside of school hours.  Visit the FCPS website for more information.  

🌟Family Engagement Survey to Open March 3

FCPS is partnering with independent research firm K12 Insight to administer a Family Engagement Survey, which will be open from Sunday, March 3, to Friday, March 22. Your feedback is critical in helping FCPS to better recognize, understand, respect, and address family strengths and needs throughout the district. Survey topics include:

• Welcoming environment
• Communication
• Student success
• Advocacy
• Family and school partnerships
• Community partnerships

The survey will be available in English, Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Pashto, Spanish, Urdu, and Vietnamese. 

Parents/caregivers will receive the survey link via email from K12 Insight. A public link will also be posted on FCPS’ website. Paper surveys will be available in our front office. Please stay tuned for more information.

💭 Share Your Thoughts on Schoology

FCPS will be conducting voluntary, anonymous surveys on the use of Schoology from Monday, March 11, to Friday, March 22. Surveys will be delivered to:

• Elementary students (grades 3-6) through the Schoology App Center.
• Secondary students via email from Naviance.

Student feedback will inform the school division’s use of Schoology and help improve its processes, communication, and professional learning for staff. FCPS’ Instructional Services Department will also be reaching out to families through focus groups.

Stress, Trauma & Coping

The experience of traumatic events shapes us, no matter if they happened during childhood or as an adult. Trauma is an event or series of circumstances that have lasting effects on mental, emotional, physical, social and spiritual well-being. Childhood trauma manifests in many ways and when carried into adulthood, it can create a cycle of adverse experiences that affect future generations. 

Trauma prevention and intervention strategies are important. Creating a strategy of helpful coping skills to pull from prepares us to face difficult moments while increasing levels of resilience and feelings of wellbeing. Here are a few tips to add to your coping strategies:

1. Seek mental health and/or substance use treatment.
2. Identify one or more people you feel safe with who can help to hold you accountable.
3. Develop, repair, or maintain healthy relationships for internal and external support.
4. Learn and practice self-regulation skills.
5. Encourage yourself and others.
6. Find ways to increase your self-esteem.
7. Focus on your strengths.
8. Model healthy behavior when dealing with difficult situations.
9. Identify your triggers and practice ways to work through them.

Dear Cardinal Families,

While music education in general offers a wealth of benefits, elementary chorus specifically holds a unique space within our school environment. It's not just about learning notes and melodies; it's about fostering collaboration, creativity, and a sense of belonging. Imagine dozens of young voices coming together, blending in harmony, and creating something beautiful – that's the magic of chorus and last night's concert was magical! Our school participated in the Madison Choral Pyramid Concert featuring singers from James Madison HS, Thoreau MS, Flint Hill ES, Louise Archer ES, Marshall Road ES, Vienna ES, and Wolftrap ES. We would like to thank our music teacher, Mr. Brian Robinson, for getting our singers ready and for being there to cheer them on. We were amazed by the talent of our young musicians. They are truly a testament to the power of music education.

Fiscal Year 2025 Proposed Budget Focused on Educational Excellence and Competitive Compensation 

At the last School Board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid proposed a budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 that focuses on excellence and providing students an equitable education in an inclusive and respectful environment, where access, opportunity, and achievement are available to all. 

The budget also prioritizes competitive compensation to attract and retain a world-class workforce. 

The FY 2025 Proposed Budget totals $3.8 billion, an increase of $301.8 million, or 8.6%, over the FY 2024 Approved Budget. Nearly 86% of the budget is focused on instruction. Key highlights include:

• Supporting students academically by maintaining existing class size formulas and providing necessary support to all students. 
• Retaining and attracting world-class educators with a 6% market scale adjustment.
• Strengthening student well-being outside of the classroom with expanded athletics offerings, additional athletic trainers, and enhanced stipends for fine and performing arts.
• Continuing initiatives including expansion of inclusive preschool, adoption of green initiatives, and funding assistant director of student activities positions previously funded with ESSER III.

Special education daily contract extensions, funding for the safety and security screening program, and late buses to support academics and activities at middle schools are several of the priorities to be addressed at the end of FY 2024.

Dear Cardinal Families, 

We are excited to share more exciting news with you this week. Our very own librarian, Meg Brinkhuis, was named the Region 1 Outstanding Teacher! Ms. Brinkhuis will go on to compete for Outstanding Teacher for FCPS. We will know more at the FCPS Honors event in June. Ms. Brinkhuis shared the following, “I love my work and the community at Cunningham Park! Thank you for the recognition of this teacher/librarian which really stands for librarians throughout FCPS!”

February brings with it two wonderful opportunities to celebrate – Kindness Week and Valentine's Day! While separate occasions, they share a beautiful common thread: spreading love, appreciation, and kindness. This week our school will be buzzing with activities designed to foster empathy, inclusivity, and acts of service. Students will explore the power of kind words, participate in thoughtful gestures for classmates and staff, and engage in projects that benefit our school community. We look forward to witnessing the outpouring of kindness throughout the month of February. Thank you for joining us in making our school a brighter and more welcoming place for all!

Presidents Day (Holiday)

All schools and offices will be closed on Monday, February 19, for the Presidents Day holiday. Learn more about Presidents Day in Britannica.com. Classes will resume on Tuesday, February 20. See the complete school year calendar.

Sign Up for FCPS Summer Camps 

Registration is now open for several summer camps and learning opportunities offered by Fairfax County Public Schools for all students.

Career and Technical Education (CTE) camps and Institute for the Arts camps will be held in July at Lake Braddock Secondary School from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bus transportation will be available from select FCPS middle and high schools. 

Tech Adventure Camp is available for current grade K-5 students to explore STEAM, culinary, health, trades, and business and marketing areas. E-IFTA is a weekly arts camp for elementary students who love to sing, dance, act, perform, make, and create. Visit the E-IFTA webpage to register.

Through Schoology®, all FCPS students have 24/7 access to no-cost, year-round, on-demand, 1-to-1 tutoring services through Tutor.com.

A new Teacher-Referred Tutoring program feature provides targeted support and extends student learning. Teachers can now refer students for tutoring, with their specific needs already identified. Students can get extra support — on their own schedule — and reinforce their in-class learning.

Caregivers can guide students to access expert tutoring, homework help, and writing support by clicking on the Tutor.com icon in their Schoology portal—anytime, anywhere.

Plus, look for teachers’ tutoring session referrals on the Tutor.com homepage.

Learn About Science, Technology, and Arts Magnet Schools

Three FCPS elementary magnet schools provide programs that enhance learning in science, technology, and performing arts. 

If you are interested in sending your student to an elementary magnet school program, consider attending a school-based information night at Hunters Woods Elementary School, Bailey’s Primary Elementary School, or Bailey’s Upper Elementary School. 

Information nights will provide an opportunity to learn about individual school programs, student eligibility, the lottery process, and transportation.

Registration for the 2024-25 elementary magnet lottery is open Tuesday, March 5, through Friday, April 12. Get more information about the schools, their programs, and locations.

📚 Lexia Parent Night How We Help Your Child Learn to Read

FCPS funds the use of Lexia for all elementary and middle schools to use as part of their literacy instruction. Lexia is a computer-based program that supplements classroom instruction to help students develop literacy skills. It also provides teachers with data to identify students who need additional support, and the ability to know which specific concepts and skills to prioritize.Attend an information night on Monday, February 12, at 6:30 p.m., at Thoreau Middle School. Parents/caregivers will learn more about Lexia, and how FCPS is integrating it into the classroom and supporting student growth in reading. Attendees will also get tips for supporting their students at home.

Register to attend or submit a question in advance. Unable to attend in person? Join on Zoom. 

Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and FCPS Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of third grade.

Dear Cardinal Families, 

We are excited to share some exciting news with you! All Kids Bike is a non-profit organization that is on a mission to teach every child in America how to ride a bike in kindergarten PE class. This year, All Kids Bike has been fortunate to receive a grant award from HDR, an engineering firm, and together, they chose us to have an All Kids Bike program at Cunningham Park.  The All Kids Bike Kindergarten Learn-to-Ride Program is a 24-fleet of bikes, pedal conversion kits, 2 steel rolling storage racks, helmets, one teacher instruction bike, and online curriculum training, which is everything needed to teach kids how to progress from balance to riding a bike in 8 lessons. Thank you to HDR, All Kids Bike, and FCPS Safe Routes to School for choosing us for this program. Our kindergartners are ready to soar to success!

This week is National School Counseling Week, and highlights the tremendous impact school counselors have in helping students achieve academic success and planning for a career. Our school counselor, Ms. Lujan, works with students in a variety of different capacities, whether it is through classroom lessons, group sessions, or individual counseling. Please take a moment this week to let Ms. Lujan know how much you appreciate her!

Progress reports will be sent home in Friday Folders on February 9 for those students whose parents did not select “Go Paperless” in their ParentVUE accounts.  Progress Reports were posted to ParentVUE accounts on February 5.  If you have not set up a ParentVUE account, please call the school office for assistance at 703-255-5600.

On February 14th everyone is welcome to come to school in cozy clothes! We will have an author visit with John Gallagher and throughout the day, classes, including teachers, will Drop Everything and Read.   

You can pre-order a copy of one of Mr. Gallagher’s books at our local bookseller, Bards Alley! Books ordered by Feb. 8th, will be delivered for Mr. Gallagher to sign!

Superintendent to Present FY 2025 Proposed Budget

Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid will present the Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 Proposed Budget at the School Board meeting on Thursday, February 8, at 7:30 p.m. Dr. Reid’s presentation, as well as other budget documents, will be available after she presents to the board.

Want to know if your child's bus is on schedule or where the bus is? Here Comes the Bus® is an easy-to-use website and app that enables parents to see the location of their child’s school bus — almost in real time — on a smartphone, tablet, or personal computer. 

Parents can track multiple buses if their children don’t all ride the same bus; know exactly when children arrive at school or the bus stop; and receive customized text and/or email notifications about bus locations, schedule changes, or delays.

To get started, download the app from the Apple iOS or Android app store. Check out the Here Comes the Bus and Frequently Asked Questions webpages for more information.

Dear Cardinal Families, 

Did you know that everyone's brain works a little differently? Just like we have different strengths and interests, our minds also take unique paths to learn and process information. This is called neurodiversity, and it's something to celebrate!

Some brains might be super organized and love routines, while others thrive on creativity and thinking outside the box. Some learners might zoom through a page of text, while others prefer to take their time and soak it all in. And that's okay!

Here at Cunningham Park, we embrace neurodiversity and believe that every mind matters. We want all our students to feel valued and supported, no matter how their brains work. We know that when we understand and appreciate our differences, we can create a stronger, more inclusive learning community.

FCPS provides multiple resources for families interested in exploring neurodiversity. Kristen Haynor, FCPS Neurodiversity Specialist, has a webinar posted at the Family Resource Center for parents and families. Take a look and remember, neurodiversity is a superpower! By working together and appreciating our differences, we can create a school where everyone feels welcome, valued, and ready to learn!

Portrait of a Graduate (POG) Information for Home

Think about the opportunities and challenges you encounter each day and the skills you use to navigate them. In Virginia, the Profile of a Virginia Graduate encompasses the knowledge, skills, experiences and attributes that students must develop to succeed in life and be “future ready.” In FCPS, we actualize this through our Portrait of a Graduate (POG). Continue to learn more about POG on our FCPS website!

As we embark on a new year, let's reflect on the importance of emotional regulation and the impact it has on our well-being. Use these tools to help you and your family!

1. Setting Intentions and the Green Zone: This is a great time to set intentions for the year ahead. In the Green Zone, we encourage you to reflect on your emotional goals and consider what steps you can take to achieve them. Whether it's practicing mindfulness, incorporating self-care routines, or fostering positive connections, setting intentions can guide us towards emotional balance.

2. Winter Blues and the Blue Zone: The winter season can sometimes bring a touch of the blues. If you find yourself in the Blue Zone, remember it's okay to acknowledge those feelings. Engage in activities that bring you joy, reach out to friends or family for support, and consider ways to add warmth and brightness to your days.

3. Celebrating Successes in the Yellow Zone: January is a perfect time to celebrate your accomplishments, big or small. In the Yellow Zone, recognize your achievements and take pride in your progress. Acknowledging success can boost motivation and reinforce positive habits.

4. Coping with Challenges in the Red Zone: If you encounter challenges that lead you to the Red Zone, remember the importance of healthy coping strategies. Whether it's deep breathing exercises, talking to a trusted friend, or seeking professional support, there are resources available to help navigate difficult times.
