Cunningham Park Elementary School presents as a case study of possibilities that open to our children and staff when accountability becomes authentic. Focusing on the three priorities that were made evident by crises, we saw the roof of testing come off of learning, as we handed the world to its future - our children.

In the summer of 2019 Mrs. Le asked me if I would paint a mural at CPES and, without any details, I said yes. I later learned that the original idea had been a games-based mural with sensory experiences.

CPES patrols said their pledge and received their badges at their first meeting of the school year.

First graders participated in a project-based learning activity to choose a fictional mayor. Our entry event was meeting the Vienna Mayor, Linda Colbert to find out all the details of what a mayor does.

“Just one more question!!” Tyler, a third grader, rushed toward his screen, grabbing my attention. The group of us, each in our own little cell, looked at him through our monitors.
“If the world is ours, can we change it?” He asked.

After months of meeting for lively book clubs and practice “Battles,” the Cunningham Park 7th annual (and 1st virtual) Battle of the Books took place on Friday, May 8 on Google Meet!
